Cheshire East next week expected to vote through 4.99 per cent rise in council tax

Cheshire East Council is next week expected to vote through a 4.99 per cent hike in council tax which will take the total bill for a band D property up to an average £2,332.

The increase – which includes two per cent ring-fenced for adult social care – is expected to be rubber stamped at Wednesday’s (February 26) meeting of the full council .

The council had wanted to set a rise of up to 9.99 per cent but its request was refused by the government.

The council tax comprises four elements – the precepts for Cheshire East,  the police, the fire service and the individual parish councils.

The 4.99 per cent rise to be recommended to full council next week, will see Cheshire East’s part of the bill [precept] go up from £1,792.59 for a band D property to £1,882.04.

Earlier this month Cheshire Police and Crime panel approved the commissioner’s proposal to increase the police precept by 5.3 per cent, which sees an additional £14 added to a band D property, taking it to £276.94 for the year.

The fire authority precept will increase by 5.6 per cent, taking its part of a band D bill to £95.09.

Parish and town councils set different precepts, and these are too numerous to list, but Cheshire East says an average total for parish councils for the whole year is £78.54.

This could be slightly more or less depending on which town/parish you live in.

When these totals are added together this means the average bill for a band D property will rise from £2,109 last year to £2,332 for 2025/6.
