Stone canoeist Adam Burgess gets silver at Paris Olympics

Stone canoeist Adam Burgess has added to Staffordshire’s medal tally at the Paris Olympics this week, with a thrilling silver in the men’s canoe slalom.

He saw off stiff competition to finish the slalom in 96.84 seconds, managing to successfully banish the hurt of the Tokyo Olympics where he missed out on bronze by just 2 hundredths of a second.

Adam started canoeing aged 10 on the River Trent in Stone, and trains with Stafford and Stone Canoe Club.

Staffordshire County Council Cabinet Member for Communities Victoria Wilson said: “We have so much talent in this county, and Adam’s medal is testament to how hard he works and trains. To miss out three years ago by such a tiny margin, only to come back this year and achieve silver shows his tenacity and his determination.

“I want to congratulate him on this fantastic achievement, and also wish him all the best in kayak cross happening later this week. We’ll all be behind him.”

Adam will compete in the kayak cross heat tomorrow, July 30, with the semi-final and final happening on Thursday.
