UPGRADED TENNIS COURTS REOPEN FOR FREE USE AT PARK
Work to upgrade tennis courts in Kidsgrove for free public use has been completed.
Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council has utilised an investment of almost £50,000 –supported by the LTA Tennis Foundation and delivered by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) – to refurbish the courts at Clough Hall park.
The work follows last year’s £116,000 refurbishment of 14 tennis courts at Wolstanton Park and Westlands Sports Ground.
Craig Skelding, Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council's Cabinet member for Leisure, Culture and Heritage, said: “Refurbishing the tennis courts and then providing free use for local communities has proved very popular at Wolstanton and Westlands and I’m sure it will have the same impact in Kidsgrove.
“Having good quality sporting facilities close by is so important to encouraging keeping people healthy and active, which is why we’re making these tennis courts available free of charge, so as many residents as possible can enjoy the benefit.”
Through the Parks Tennis Project, the LTA is delivering the biggest ever investment in parks tennis facilities across Britain and revitalising old courts.
This nationwide programme of investment is seeing thousands of existing park tennis courts in poor or unplayable condition brought back to life for the benefit of communities across the country, providing vital opportunities for children and adults to get active.
The courts have undergone extensive work to ensure viability for years to come, including resurfacing, repainting, new fencing, new nets and a new gate system.
All courts are now available to book via the LTA website – where users should search for “Clough Hall Park” – or here. New booking systems and gate access technology means it is now easier to get on court by booking in advance to guarantee availability. The courts are free to play on and The LTA and borough council will work together to ensure free park tennis sessions are available on the courts providing regular opportunities for anyone to pick up a racket and play.
More information about bookings, and gaining access to the courts, is available here.
Cllr. Skelding added: “This will be there for everyone to have a go; whatever their ability there will be an opportunity for them.”
