Warning issued to quarry off-roaders

Churnet sound news

Officers are warning off-road bikers that they face having their vehicles seized if they continue to use them at a quarry in Staffordshire.

We have been alerted to several incidents at Tickhill Quarry, near Caverswall, involving riders on motorbikes acting in an anti-social manner.

Residents say that the riders are causing distress, noise, disruption and damage.

PC Fenton, Moorlands local policing team problem-solving lead, said: “Officers are carrying out increased patrols to deter those who choose to ride off-road illegally and pose a danger to themselves and others in the quarry and on a nearby bridle path.

“Signs warning that a Section 59 notice is in force in the area have also been installed. This gives our officers authority to seize vehicles being driven in an anti-social manner.

“Quarries are not play areas, or race tracks. They pose a threat to motorcyclists and quad-bikers. Hazards include sheer faces and the risk of falling, loose rocks and cold, deep water.

“Mobile phone signal is also extremely weak in the area, meaning that any call to the emergency services if someone is in danger following an accident could be delayed.”

Anyone with concerns over anti-social behaviour (ASB) should call 101, or contact us via the Live Chat facility on our website.

You can also make an anonymous report by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Tell us what you know, not who you are.
